ABCS Oral Examination – Highest Scorers

The highest scorers were tied on the ABCS Oral Examination and are honored by receiving the “Robert F. Jackson, MD, Award.”  This award exemplifies the outstanding performance demonstrated by Dr. Jackson throughout his many years of dedicated service as an Oral Examiner, Past President and current Trustee of the ABCS.  This year’s recipients are Brett S. Kotlus, MD and Robert J. Troell, MD.

ABCS Written Examination – Highest Scorer

The highest scorer on the ABCS Written Examination is honored by receiving the “William K. Miles, MD, Award.”  Dr. Miles’s service on the Board of Trustees, as Oral Examiner and as Chairman of the Credentials Committee in past years, demonstrated the highest standards of excellence in the practice of cosmetic surgery.  Dr. Miles passed away on March 22, 2009, after serving his community in Fort Worth, Texas for more than 44 years.  This award recognizes the outstanding academic achievement by the highest-scoring candidate.  This year’s recipient is Brent R. Rosen, DO.

“We’ve had it happen three times,” says Dr. Samir Pancholi, a cosmetic and facial plastic surgeon from Las Vegas. “The first time, it was a woman in her 50s who came in and got treatment, then said, ‘My purse is in the car, I’ll go grab it and be right back.’ Then she was gone.”

While Pancholi never filed theft reports (“This is low on the police’s radar,” he says), other Botox bandits have been reported in Newport Beach, Calif.; Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Tampa, Fla.; Brisbane, Australia and Kenton, England.

Dr. Brett Kotlus and Dr. Charles Mok of Allure Medical Spa were recently featured on the beauty industry blog discussing the use of Vectra 3-D imaging (from Canfield Imaging Systems) during cosmetic surgery consultations.

“After seeing what my outcome would look like and comparing three different sizes I was completely comfortable picking an implant size; I went into surgery with my mind completely at ease,” says one patient featured in the article.

30 minutes is all that is required for a consultation, says Dr. Kotlus, which includes 3-D imaging and surgery simulation.  Along with the Vectra system, Allure Medical Spa utilizes a variety of other technologies such as Visia Skin Analysis, Lumenis Laser Treatments, and Laser Assisted Liposuction.

Two of his patients recently spoke to reporters for msnbc.  Tami Fry, a 31-year-old patient of Dr. Koehler said she was inspired by her mother’s tummy tuck and breast lift results.  “When I saw how beautiful my mom looked, I said, ‘that’s it. I’m doing it.’”

Surgical procedures included facial bone reconstructions, eyelid reconstructions, and facial tumor resections.  “The physicians in Mongolia are highly motivated to advance the quality of medical care in their country, but their access to resources is limited. One half of Mongolians live in small huts, as part of a nomadic lifestyle,” said Dr. Kotlus.

Health for Humanity organized the mission, a group that “focuses primarily on blindness prevention and development of vision services to address local health issues and challenges.”  With his background in oculofacial plastic surgery, Dr. Kotlus was particularly qualified to assist the group in Mongolia.

“My visit to Mongolia gave me a rich cultural experience and it helped me to appreciate the high quality of medicine we have in the United States.”  The doctor says he plans to develop an online consultation service with the surgeons to assist them further.
