2017-Present Physician mentor for local high school students interested in a career in medicine. Students come from Belen Jesuit Prep, Lourdes, Ransom, Carrollton, and Palmer Trinity.
2014-2017 Cleveland Clinic Physician Mentor- Served as a mentor to medical students and general surgery residents.
2012-2014 UNM Hospital Physician Mentor- Served as a mentor to college students for those interested in a career in healthcare. Students from the University of New Mexico became volunteers at UNM Hospital and were allowed to shadow me and my colleagues to allow for exposure to the realities of what it’s like to be a surgeon.
2012-2013 Southwest Canine Corps of Volunteers- Certified my Labrador retriever as a therapy dog. Guinness and I would visit patients, once a month, at different nursing homes as well as at the UNM Children’s Hospital.
2007 – 2009 Students Helping Students- This organization was created at Ponce School of Medicine in order to address the needs of the student body. I gave lectures on USMLE Step 1 techniques and shared important tips on improving the medical school academic experience.
2006 – 2009 Amor Que Sana (Love That Heals)-This is a free clinic that offers food, clothing, needle exchange, and medications for the indigent of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The individuals are mainly IV drug users and homeless. I served in the capacity as a medical student during my years in Ponce School of Medicine helping out mainly with the clinical aspects of the project.
2002 – 2005 NCSU Emergency Medical Services Organization- Created the organization in the fall of 2001 to provide college students the opportunity to become certified as emergency medical technicians as well as provide their services at university events.
2001 – 2004 Raleigh Rescue Mission-Assisted the organization with providing basic medical attention to the homeless living in downtown Raleigh, NC.
2001 NCSU EMS Middle School Service Project-Created and helped implement a middle school first aid awareness program to educate children in basic first aid techniques.
1998 – 2000 Belen Jesuit Missions- Participated in several missions of mercy to the Dominican Republic
1998 – 1999 Miami Children’s Hospital- High school volunteer assistant to Dr. Ana Duarte in her pediatric dermatology clinic.
1997 Key Club-Florida Network of Youth and Family Services (Miami Bridge Center) – Mentored runaway teens, helping them develop coping skills. Hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at the center.
1996 Key Club- Iodine Deficiency Disorder (I.D.D.) Project- Chaired committee and raised $10,000 through fundraisers for the project, which helped create awareness of iodine deficiency in developing countries around the world.
